The kids will be home from school for over 2 weeks. Now’s the time to clean out those toy boxes!
Children are ready to part with past toys with visions of new ones dancing in their heads.
Additionally, you are apt to stumble across some old favorites that will keep your kiddos occupied until Santa makes his appearance.
Here are 3 quick steps to decluttering and donating old toys.
Step One: designate a place to put toys for donation.
The best place is straight into the trunk of your car! Make it a game and see how many bags you can fill in an hour. Celebrate your success with a quick donation drive by and a happy meals for your hard working partners!
Step Two: designate a place to store toys that are past their prime but not ready to be donated.
The sooner you start decluttering toys on a regular basis, the more ready your kiddos are to let past toys go. But in the beginning, your kiddos are going to want to keep some toys that they really no longer need.
Designate a closet or part of the storage room for these toys. Getting them out of the toy area and stored will lessen the visual clutter in the active toy areas in your home.
I have used plastic storage drawers, plastic tubs with lids and colored bins with lids to store our kids’ toys.
As you can see, it’s time for us to go through the storage room, too!
This is the only toy I still have from my childhood. I am half tempted to donate it, but since I still have it…
What would you do?
Step Three: Organize the toys you have left.
Here are links to all the posts I have written this year about organizing kid’s toys.
Yesterday, I shared how I organized a client’s toys in a closet under the stairs.
This fall, I shared 5 lessons I have learned while professionally organizing kid’s rooms.
Do you have a little girl? Here is a post I wrote about organizing my daughter’s bedroom.
Our kids’ toys are stored in a loft.
And here is a glimpse of our son’s room when he was 11.
Now get in there and start sorting!
